Official and maximally safe sightseeing tours to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Those who visit the Exclusion Zone should remember that the area was the result of a tragic catastrophe and does not resemble amusement parks at all. In general radiation levels are much lower here, but these sites are still contaminated. There are some rules in the area that will help visitors maintain their health and get more information. Please, be aware that all instructions given by your guide, need to be followed without exceptions.

Visitors need to use clothes and footwear that maximally protect the body, head, arms, legs.

Forbidden: T-shirts with short sleeves, shorts, skirts, dresses, open shoes.

If you wish to “celebrate” your visit, be aware that drinking alcohol is strictly forbidden, and at the same time, you can inhale and swallow radioactive dust.

You can satisfy your needs in canteens, cafes, or inside your transport.

Drinking water from wells, rivers or other open ground sources is dangerous for your life. You can only use water from the water supply system of the city of Chernobyl, or imported water that can be purchased in shops.

It is prohibited to export from the Zone: vegetables, fruits, berries, mushrooms. Other food grown in the area is also banned.

  • at the checkpoints of the exclusion zone;
  • in Chernobyl;
  • at the viewpoint of SSE ChNPP;
  • in Pripyat, decontamination workshop of personal protective equipment
  • at the Chernobyl-2 facility.

Any type of weapon is forbidden to bring with you to the Exclusion Zone – this will lead to additional problems, and flammable substances, such as acetone, oil, can cause a fire. It is also prohibited make a fire in Exclusion zone.

It is strictly forbidden to enter any abandoned residential or industrial buildings. It is forbidden to climb up on the stairs or otherwise on an antenna located in the Chernobyl-2 facility or touch any structures or plants while on the route. It is prohibited to sit on the ground or put your personal belongings, such as a backpack, photo-equipment.

  • It is dangerous to swim in the ponds, sunbathe.
  • You must strictly follow the requirements of warning and prohibition signs, radiation safety posters.

It is strictly forbidden to take any animals to the exclusion zone and take animals, living in the exclusion zone, with you.

Photo-video, including a quadcopter, can be done within the route and with the permission of the accompanying person. The permit is regulated by the Law of Ukraine “On the use of nuclear energy and radiation safety” and the Instruction “On the procedure of protection of state secrets, and other information …”. It is strictly forbidden to make shooting on the following territories: “Chernobyl NPP”, “SNFS-1”, “SNFS-2”, “Open Switchgear”, ”Point of Temporary Localization of Radioactive Waste”, ” Radioactive Waste Disposal Point”, in Pripyat town – not closer than 1700 m to SSE “ChNPP”.

  • Don’t forget to inform your guide and police officers at the checkpoint “Dytiatky” about having equipment/drones with you.

When you are leaving the exclusion zone it is mandatory to pass the radiation monitoring of clothing, footwear, personal belongings, and vehicles. If reference levels are exceeded, it means that personal clothing, shoes, things are to be decontaminated.

  • In case of violation or not following the rules and instructions of your guide, the group will be forced to leave the area.
  • If the violation is contrary to the norms of moral and ethical behavior, radiation and fire safety, all participants of the excursion, accompanied by law enforcement officers of the exclusion zone, will be delivered to the checkpoint ”Dytiatky”. It will not be possible to visit the exclusion zone again.
  • Foreigners and stateless persons who are in Ukraine on legal grounds in case of emergencies follow the same rights and bear same responsibility as citizens of Ukraine. The exceptions established by the Constitution, laws or international agreements of Ukraine, consent to the laxity provided by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Article 21, Code of Civil Defense of Ukraine).
